The Special

Project Type: Institutional
Scale: 2,910 SF
Status: Design 2017 The Special is an intimate performance and event space in Hollywood.  Land Office designed this conversion of a 25’-wide commercial building into a flexible venue for live, streaming, and recorded music, theater, cabaret, film screenings, and the visual arts.

Given the limited space, the design for The Special makes the most of a single large room that can be transformed with reconfigurable elements. Retractable seating risers allows this room to be used both for performances and as an exhibition gallery.  Seamlessly integrated technical and acoustic infrastructure supports professional audio/video production.

Additional uses were carefully slotted into the available space. The Special’s office occupied a new mezzanine over a food prep area for catering service and pop-up restaurant events. As part of the overall reconfiguration, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems was to be substantially upgraded and the existing structure will be made compliant with current code requirements
