Main Museum

Project Type: Institutional
Scale: 100,000 SF
Status: Completed 2018
Land Office provided master planning and design services for The Main, a non-collecting museum space in downtown Los Angeles. Our comprehensive plan for this emerging institution laid out phased redevelopment of a 100,000 sf three-building complex, including the historic Hellman building.

Construction proceeded through Phase 2, which augmented the existing galleries with a suite of five artist studios and a shared space for The Main’s artist-in-residence program. A mezzanine was converted into a further gallery space and staff offices. Additional phases were slated to transform basement and rooftop areas into exhibition and program spaces.

In 2020, ArtCenter College of Design arranged to take over The Main’s DTLA space as an exhibition and program venue for their Pasadena-based programs. Land Office is currently working with ArtCenter on new planning directions and facilities improvements.
