Broad Lawn

Project Type: Cultural
Scale: 28,000 SF
Status: Design 2015
Following on Nora Gordon’s role in the successful completion of their new building, the Broad Museum commissioned Land Office directly to propose strategies for extending their Grand Street pocket park onto the 20,000sf concrete deck behind the Museum. This presented several challenges: the deck was effectively the roof of a parking garage, raised several stories above Hope Street and only accessible from the south, Further, any improvements had to be easily reversible to allow for future development.

Our proposal features a carpet-like lawn set in a shallow tray of soil set back from the deck’s perimeter to leave a code-required egress path. The lawn slopes up gently at the north to provide informal seating for film and video projections with space underneath for service equipment and restrooms. New feature stairs down to Hope Street complete the egress system and enhance pedestrian access.

This space is intended to serve as a gateway for the many visitors coming to the Grand Street cultural district through the future Regional Connector station.
