Blackwelder Creative Campus
Project Type: Commercial
Scale: 33,000 SF
Status: Completed 2008-2011
Role: Nora Gordon as Project Architect for RAC Design Build
Nora Gordon provided design and construction administration services
for multiple adaptive reuse projects at Blackwelder, a 6.4-acre creative
campus in Culver City’s Arts District while lead architect at RAC Design
Build.
The existing buildings have been transformed from industrial use to
offices for media and creative services while keeping their authentic
patina. Interventions include new mezzanines and second floors, upgraded
windows and insulation, skylights and glazed roll-up doors, and enhanced
entrances. The campus combines shared paths and landscaping with
private courtyards and site-specific sculpture.
Each Blackwelder project was designed and constructed to an achievable
standard of environmental sustainability, focused on reuse of existing fabric
and passive temperature control. Moreover, every design was tailored to its tenants, catering to the needs of creatives and industry clients.
Building 1.03 for jumP editorial and Building 1.16 for The Mill included
infrastructure for the post-production editing companies’ servers, edit
bays, and cycloramas.
Nora Gordon was lead architect at RAC Design Build and provided full
architectural services for these projects. Concept design for The Mill (Building 1.16) was
prepared by HMKM/London, while Nora served as the Executive Architect.
