Elwood Building Re-Roof & Systems Upgrades
ArtCenter College of Design
Project Type: Institutional
Scale: 220,000 SF
Status: Completed 2022
Opened in 1976, ArtCenter’s Hillside Campus comprises 176 hillside
acres overlooking northwest Pasadena. The campus centerpiece is an
impeccably detailed structure designed by noted Modernist Craig Ellwood
that stretches 675 feet long to bridge the arroyo running through the site.
A sympathetic south wing was added by former Elwood associate James
Tyler in 1991. The Hillside Campus was designated a City of Pasadena
historic monument in 2014.
For the Ellwood Building’s comprehensive infrastructure upgrade and
re-roofing, Land Office partnered with waterproofing specialists SGH to
evaluate and replace 122,000 sf of roof assembly, handled all permitting
with the local jurisdiction of Pasadena, and coordinated consultant work for new mechanical service throughout the 220,000 sf interior,
new electrical inverter rooms, and discreet structural enhancements to
accommodate new rooftop equipment and a solar panel array.
Given the building’s historic status, Land Office paid particular attention
to detailing the roof edge and scuppers to ensure that the edge flashing of
the new roofing system (a single ply PVC membrane) would match that of
the built-up roofing it replaced.
