Jules Bates Artrouble Center
ArtCenter College of Design
Project Type: Institutional
Scale: 3,400 SF
Status: Completed 2021
In 2019, ArtCenter’s Archives and Special Collections received a major donation of Jules Bates’ photography and related material documenting Los Angeles’ punk and new wave scenes. Following the establishment of the Jules Bates Artrouble Center, ArtCenter engaged Land Office to design a new archive and research space.
Given a limited budget, we converted an administrative office suite into a two-part arrangement of public-facing elements and secure archives. The former includes a reading room, temperature-controlled space for the rare book collection, and staff offices. The balance of the Artrouble Center is a secure zone for high-density shelving and accessioning and preservation workspaces. A custom steel mesh screen allows a visual connection between public and archival spaces.
